How to make those door bigger?

Which direction does the room face? That can make a difference as to how a room feels and I'm not sure adding more windows is the answer

I would try some paint first, maybe a nice cream color which has yellow as its base.

You have two choices- a door stretcher, or frame larger openings for French doors. Either way, it's not a DIY project for a nub!
