Obviously, for some people, it's not an issue. My place has a perfectly nice, functional galley kitchen on the back of the house. It leads out to a formal dining room, which then leads to the living room where the front windows are. I barely use the dining room. Have a table and sideboard in there and it actually has a non-functioning fireplace. It all looks nice, but I rarely use it. I'd much rather have a bigger, brighter kitchen with an island and room for decent-sized table and chairs. I'm not going to reconfigure this place because I'm moving soon.
But, just for discussion, if you couldn't have both, would you prefer smaller non-eat-in kitchen (or kitchen with room for only a very small table and a couple of chairs) and a dining room, or a bigger kitchen with room for larger table and more chairs and possibly counter space (island or otherwise) with room for stools.

I'd absolutely take the "or room for a very small table and a couple of chairs kitchen" (that's enough to make a kitchen feel warm and cozy) and a comfortable, bright (in the day time) welcoming to sit down anytime dining room.
I'd actually choose the small table/chairs kitchen. I live alone and don't NEED too much space. Yeah, it might suck a bit if family come over but, functionality wise, the bigger space would be a waste of money.
Neither. I don't want a formal dining room but I'd rather not have an eat-in kitchen. I have an open living/dining/kitchen and the dining table is a separate space from the kitchen but not walled off.
I have no need for a dining room so bigger kitchen with eating area. Preferably one that connects to the living room. I hate walls. It makes a house feel like a box of coffins, lol.
I have both, our dining room is wasted space. Even when we have people over, they hang out in the kitchen. It's only when we try to cram everyone we know into the house at one time that the dining room is used (once every 3 years), but before we had a big house people would simply eat where ever they found a comfy spot.
I wish my house was smaller by the size of the dining room. If we buy again and have a choice between the 3 options, I'll always default to no formal dining room but that's WAY on down the list.
I'll be the odd man out and take the formal dining room. But, FWIW, it's because we have a lot of purposes for that room that have nothing to do with dining. It's handy to have a room that is set apart from the others.
As for eating, we don't dine very much at the kitchen table, so I could live without it if I had to. In reality, we're big baseball fans and we eat while watching the ballgame. But I would choose to have a kitchen table and a bigger open kitchen if I had the option. Galley kitchens aren't my favorite.
