I am looking at a small house that doesn't have a dining room - okay by me - I usually eat on the couch in front of the tv ... The current owners have a small high top pub table and stools in the corner of the kitchen and I thought there might be room for a banquette bench and drop leaf table.
what do you think? The kitchen is decent sized, just needs new cabinet fronts and a new countertop...

sorry I wasn't clear when I posted this originally - I am thinking of having it built in.....

Go out shopping/browsing and look at what is now available at several furniture stores. I did when I bought my house, I was amazed at what was out there since I am "old school" and had the same ole, same ole my whole life. Plus, it is fun!

Just from seeing this picture, I can see why you are interested in this house! Looks nice and neat and clean and well taken care of, and I love the view!

Have fun!

I like the idea of a banquet table in that area. A bench under the window and a table with a drop leaf at one end like one of these would extend your seating and working surface.

I can respond because I would need to see the larger view of the room to see if I thought I would like it. That said, my only other concern is depending upon where you live that window area might be very cold and drafty or very hot.

There's not enough room- considering the size of standard seating/table, and adequate room for entering/exiting said seating area.

ban·quette
baNGˈket/Submit
noun
1.
an upholstered bench along a wall, especially in a restaurant or bar.

I think the OP wants to have built or to put a banquette in the niche in her kitchen. I don't think she has room for a banquet table.

I think you could run a bench along the wall under that big picture, and if you wanted, have it turn the corner and finish up against the kitchen cabinet. It would be smaller than the usual banquette, which most often seats 2-3 people on each side of the ell. But it might look quite nice, and the long narrow table you put in front of it could also serve as additional counter space when using the kitchen.

I have a small round drop leaf table that I honestly never use - since I tend to eat in the living room in front of the tv on a tray. I thought a built in bench under the window (maybe with some storage room below and the put 1 of the 2 chairs against the wall - I agree not enough room to build an "L" shaped bench - possibly would give enough room to use the 2nd chair if needed... will have to do some measuring.

thanks all!

OP, I think you might be able to do a banquette in that space-- I also like the idea of the drop leaf. I would need to see the rest of the room.

RE: the cabinets-- From what I can see, the boxes may be particleboard, so I don't know if redoing the doors would be worth it. Its hard to tell from the pics.

Not enough room if you are talking about it running back to the window. Can't tell from the photo what's to the right to know if there is enough room further down the wall but I'm guessing not if the current owners squeezed in the pub table.

Was the original dining room turned into another bedroom or something? Hard to envision a house that has no dining room and not enough room in the kitchen for a table and chairs. Personally, I wouldn't buy that house because that would be a huge concern for me for resale - very small target market who would buy a house without an eating area.
