I don't think what the OP has is popcorn...at least not to the standard of S, CA. Our popcorn was granular and can be knocked off by simply hitting it with a stiff brush. This is something in a paint not popcorn sprayed into paint.

When we had our family room done some years ago took a half a day to get rid of the popcorn and another day to fix the ceiling. Cost $500 or so., They simply wet it and scraped it off. Floor was covered with plastic and they just rolled it all up when done.

All in all painless. We put in fancy lighting before painting the ceiling. All came out great.

Funny you say that because I’m in a hotel and guess what I see when I look up? Yup looks just like my ceilings.

^.
popcorn also come in different greade.
there is "light" "medium" and "heavy".
I went with "heavy" on mine, it covers better.

the pics above look like "light", or even "sand paint" perhaps.

Well if you really want to get a look at the problem simple google "popcorn ceiling images". I was even somewhat amazed at the range... There are even some images of a popcorn ceiling being removed.

Here is one example that is close to what we had.

While I would not have popcorn ceilings installed, I just do not get this fixation on removing them. They are a ceiling. Who looks up? I say paint it and be done with it.

I am one of the people who looks up. And I can't stand popcorn ceilings. I think they look dirty and ugly. Right now, I'm in the process of having all of them removed in my house. If I would have known how awful they are, I would have removed them prior to moving in.

I love the rooms in my house that are already done because they look so much cleaner and smooth. It doesn't cost very much to remove them and even if it did, I would still do it.

If they don't bother you, then I can certainly understand why you wouldn't care about them. I don't judge others who have them, I just don't want them in my house.
