I had been resistant to getting stainless steel appliances because I thought they were cliche. This year we bought a stainless steel dishwasher and I love how it camouflages drips until I can wipe them off. We also have a fairly new black oven. I like the way it looks, but cleaning the cook-top is a problem. The soap residue is very noticeable.

I would like to replace the black oven with a stainless steel oven, but I can't seem to find any that don't have a black top. Are they all like that....stainless steel body and black cook-top? Or am I not looking in the right location?

A little bit goes a long way. Use a non-scratch pad, wipe with clean water, dry with dish towel.

I have black appliances with a gas range. After I clean it with the dishrag, I then wipe it down with glass cleaner to make it all shiny and pretty.

Yes; what you are finding is basically true.

I think the reasoning behind it is this- stainless steel when heated will turn colors; anything from a slight yellow to dark blue/navy color. Since people want their stainless to be "stainless" manufacturers don't use SS near heating elements/burners. Black porcelain steel is the norm; plus, the porcelain tends to be easier to clean.

Make sure no soap is left and the last wipe should be with a microfiber or "e" cloth and it will shine.

If you have an electric range in stainless, it will most likely have the stovetop be glass in black.

Unless you buy one with coils, which will still be black.
