I found this blog article and found the info useful. The pictures are pretty too.

I think that dining rooms or dining areas in open areas are often undersized, so for many of us, that info will only be frustrating. But the “rules” about chandelier height, console height, rug size and other info is useful.

And if you are building a house, all of the info will be helpful.

And as always, decorating rules can be broken. But i think much of this information is good stuff.

Well, considering the "formal" dining room is going the way of the horse&buggy...

Kinda a moot point-

Funny that you mention it KB, a formal dining room was a requirement for me in our retirement home. That said, not only did we rarely use the FD in our NY home, we use it about the same here. But when I want to have one, I am so glad I do, especially when we have a bunch of people over, it would be tough using our kitchen table that is round and seats 4. The table always has a nice centerpiece on it and if not a table cloth then a pretty table runner. I do know that many no longer share my feelings, but I think that will change back too.

Pretty basic stuff. I learned that bit about centerpieces when I was a Brownie Girl Scout.

I love having a formal dining room and it is true so many are wildly undersized. Our dining room furniture is huge and the table needs to be turned at an angle to accommodate both leaves in a 12x14ish room. I wish I had known this builder could have widened the house so the room would be longer. We use our dining room a lot. Projects, tutoring, family dinners.

They don’t have to be “formal” dining spaces. My dining room is really a continuation of the kitchen, with an eating bar between. In my last house the dining room was a corner of the great room.

I thought the info for height of chandeliers was useful, as was some other of the info.

Hate to burst your bubble-

Jura miss quoted-
The last time the NAHB released a "buyer survey reference" was 2013 based on surveys from 2012. The "dining room" wasn't even mentioned. The "essential/desired" item- "table space in the kitchen".

As for the article's pictures- all of those dining rooms are in older/historic type homes- not "today's home".

I agree the info was useful. Thanks. There are many people starting out that can make use of this info and much of it could also be put to use in the kitchen. Posters offering info like this in one place make newbies life a lot easier.
