My grandfather in Puerto Rico will be remodeling his kitchen. I helped him choose three products - Moen Adler pulldown faucet, Kohler Verse double-bowl sink, and iSpring beverage faucet for his Multipure filtration system.

However, he seems to want Formica countertops in beige. Do you think this is the right decision? Right now he has pink countertops. I don't think he cares much about resale value since this will be his forever home, but do you think this is the right decision?

Geez .. pink countertops. Was that, again, your decision?
Why don't you let him have what HE wants??

Beige sounds like a perfectly good choice: a good neutral color, which RE agents prefer (neutrals) as being more salable. Are you quibbling about the choice of formica vs. a spiffier material? What's the norm in PR?

I have nothing against formica. I don't like granite, and I've read recently the trend now is away from that. Away to what alternative, I don't know. Another choice would be ceramic tile, but formica is easier to keep clean and install.

If that is what he wants, he should get it.

You and he should start with talking to a kitchen designer who specializes in universal design.
Faucets are not important.
Lighting is way more important.
Spend at least 6 months planning before commencing with any construction.

Formica® are just fine. He should also look at Wilsonart®.
The edging is critical as you want something that will take abuse.

It is his kitchen and he is paying for it. If he wants beige Formica or purple Quartz does not matter.

What’s the question? Material or color?

Color is a personal choice.

With laminate tops my only concern would be does he have A/C(?). If not, I would probably steer more toward a solid material. Whether it be stone, concrete, or a resin, at least it won’t be degradated because of high humidity.

What counter materials are available there on the island? You might tell your grandfather that he would enjoy quartz counters because he could cut on them, or place hot things on them and they wouldn’t get damaged. Formica is very fragile.

My beef is the more the material than the color. The pink countertops are original to the house (built around 1990).
