Our prior dining room table had custom made table pads that we used underneath the table cloth when we had guests at the table. They were covered in felt and about 1/2" thick.
Now we've bought a new table, and it didn't come with table pads. I'm not anxious to pay $300+ for custom made pads again. Any other suggestions? I'm only interested in protecting the table top when we're using it, and it will always be used with a table cloth.
Is it a standard size? You can just order for that size. Otherwise they sell felt like material or plastic you can trim to size.

This is what I use on my kitchen table as it is new and wooden. I too have a table cloth on it. Now it will not come close to affording you the protection of regular table pads but it is better than nothing.

This is the kind of table pad that I used to have. New ones for the new table would be $300+. My BIG concern is to protect the wood from dings when DH is using the table for poker. The edges of the table are not standard, but could fairly easily be cut to size by us IF I could figure out what kind of material to use. Again - it's protection against dings and dents that I'm after.
Get a piece of glass cut to fit. Or you can have plexiglass or polycarbonate - lighter, less fragile, but more prone to scratching. Have done many times. Most of our furniture with nice wood tops has glass tops.

I looked into both and while I was not looking for table pads they were cheaper than either glass or plexi cut to fit.
Meh. I would buy my husband a poker table and tell them to leave the dining table alone.
It would be cheaper than the cover you need to protect it.

There's absolutely NO place to put another table. I also want to protect the table from dings when we use it for dinner parties.
