I would put a tall plant or tree there or a hall tree with a mirror.

Ficus tree or a fiddelleaf fig. Both grow fast and will get as big as allowed by the size of the pot.

Not sure if it's your style but I just see a tall grandfather clock there.

If it gets any light, I'd put an interesting planter with a palm in it... Maybe black wrought iron? If there isn't any natural light, you could point a growlite on it. Please, no fake plants.
You could also put a long, narrow picture there.

a nice round glass table top with wrought iron stands with a vase and tropical flowers and a small glass bowl for keys...some where for keys and letters as you walk in the door. Also if there's room a beautiful chair to along with the decor.

I lived somewhere once that had that exact same space.

I had a nice floor plant in a pretty container there. Behind it on the wall, I had a nice piece of artwork. A pretty framed mirror might be a good choice but it would depend upon the light. I also had an uplight behind the plant.

At Christmas, that is where my christmas tree was because that nook was actually part of my living room... there wasn't a lot of room for presents under it, though!

When I look at the picture I can also see a small secretary desk... maybe.

I agree with Bob. In my own foyer along the side of the stairs I have a little marble top chest with a lamp on one side and few family pictures on the other side. It can see how it could become a catch-all if you aren't careful, but luckily we are pretty neat people so we don't have too much of a problem with it.

I would put a little door in the space under the stairs so that I could use the space to store even more stuff! and I'd put a painting on the taller wall.

By the way, who is a bf???

Lots of great ideas. Personally Id go with function. You need a mirror for last minute checks. Someplace to sit down to put your boots on or off. A place to drop your keys.

Not sure about your style, but maybe a fun, unusual chair. Or maybe a large interesting work of art. A scupture on a pedestal. A suit of armor? Maybe something like a tapestry or something with texture. (I have a handpunched wool rug my mother made(1950), about 4' x 3', that I hung from a cafe rod with the brass clip on hooks. Rather striking as a hanging) Or maybe some kind of antique curio cabinet...
I am sure you will find just the treasure for you rnifty little niche!
