I have not used color on my ceilings, but I would love to. What I don't understand is when to make the ceiling darker, when to make it lighter, whether or not to make it a totally different color than the walls. So, I'm sort of paralyzed with fear. Also, I have textured ceilings, and I think they should be smooth?
Is there a formula?

Thank you to all who responded. My foyer walls are a gold color.I had the ceiling painted today. I went a couple shades lighter than the walls. It's a Benjamin Moore color called straw.I LOVE IT! It looks beautiful with the white molding and it just looks sunny and warm.By the time I'm done, there will not be a white ceiling in my house! White ceilings are starting to look so unfinished to me [ now that I've become a colored ceiling devotee!] Take the plunge if you haven't tried. After all,it's only paint. It can be changed relatively easily. The next project is the family room.It is very open and light with big windows and sky lights. The walls are deep warm brown on the fireplace wall and a moss brown on the other walls. The cathedral ceiling in white looks stark and cold.I am painting it alittle lighter than the walls in a taupe color to soften and warm the room the rest of the way. Can't wait!

L.K. In re: family room ceiling. If you have that much brown in the room you may want to reconsider the ceiling color, may end up in a dreary den. Don't know what your furniture fabric colors are but...a pale blue with the browns would be great especially with alot of natural light. Just a thought.

Thank you for that concern and I appreciate the suggestion.I am not a blue fan at all and the furnishings would not go.I guess if it doesn't work we can change it,after all,it is just paint.I thought long and hard and looked at many swatches. The room is really so big and open that I think it will be ok.The room is right next to, and open to the kitchen which is a pretty pale yellow with a bone white ceiling. It won't be done for a few weeks.Hopefully we will like it.I appreciate your suggestion, thanks.

are there any picture threads of your finished rooms & such? I'm going thru the archives but haven't come across one yet. I have 18' odd slope ceiling in great room & came away with some great ideas from you guys. I just can never decide where you end a color or wall, and where you keep going...- in great rooms, I mean.
