Default Creative ideas to cover up mirrors in a powder room.

Okay - so we are going to be renting a place that has a powder room that... defies description, but I am going to try here.

Basically, we are renting from folks who bought this property for investment purposes, and they just purchased it this week. They are making a lot of capital improvements, but one thing they cannot afford to do at this time. Basically, the previous homeowners thought it would be a grand idea to put mirrors all over the powder room. I mean, everywhere but the floor. The back of the door... behind the commode... the walls... the ceiling...

So given that we will not be able to actually gut the bathroom, what ideas do you folks have on how to cover up the mirrors so that i don't have to use the bathroom with my eyes closed?

Can you post a pic?

Are we talking indivdual wall mirrors here or mirrored-wall tiles or plate-glass? Or ???

If the walls are "covered" in mirror I would consider doing a picture rail just under the ceiling/wall junction and hanging a LOT of art. Or installing window curtain rods and doing runched fabric(which you can remove form time-to-time to launder, since this is a bathroom).

Or consider antique-ing or adding a "patina" to your mirrors, for a shiny, but not relective look.

I Googled this product:

Antique Mirror Patina Solution Produced by: AMPS Industries Inc. [Birmingham, AL]

but have not used it, so can not comment on results.

Can't wait to see what you come up with!

They are floor to ceiling wall mirrors- I don't have a picture. The next time I am down at the townhouse I'll try to take some.

I wonder what is in the mind of some folks!

Since it's a rental, I'll probably lean more towards the fabric than doing anything permanent to the mirrors - if it was our own place, all bets are off.

What about getting some fabric and using some velcro to attach it at the top and the bottom in a couple of places? Around the top, use some decorative cording or a painted peice of wood nailed into the ceiling. Sometimes you can find some fabric for just a couple dollars a yard.

I would use that powder room as my personal coach for finally getting into great shape once and for all. The mirror doesn't lie.

I have seen powder rooms that people have done this too. URGH! As kid or teen they were neat. As an adult..........not so much.

You can write all over them w/ dry erase markers and it wipes off. If you or someone you know has GREAT script why not cover them in some neat sayings or something. Add some drawings to go along with it. You can change it for the seasons and it can become something FUN to do and remember the times spent in this house even if it was temporary. My daughters do this w/ their bathroom mirrors to write encouraging words or sayings and/or leave notes to themselves.

Ask the owners if they will allow you to do something to the mirrors that can NOT be removed. You can then get the glass etching stuff and put patterns on it that way it removes the glare and reflections a lot if you pick something w/ a LOT of the frosting part. You don't even have to be talented to do this as the craft stores have patterns for you to use. If your REAL crafty you can ask them about using paint on them.

You can also buy those clings. Not the prettiest way to disguise them though.

You can buy some nice shower curtains or drapes and hang them right at the ceiling on a rod and cover an entire wall or two to help get rid of them.

I'd ask the new owners if they would be okay with you taking the mirrors down. If they're okay with it, and you don't mind putting in the elbow grease, go for it. Of course, you'd need to check to see what behind it beforehand. You don't want to have to install sheetrock or plaster. But a can of paint isn't that much if it really matters to you.

If you don't want to go for that then I'd agree with others and say go for some floor to ceiling curtains.

Thanks for your advice, folks. We're probably going to go the fabric route, as we cannot take down or otherwise deface the mirrors. This might change down the line if we end up buying the place from them - but we'll see how it goes.

As soon as I get down there again, I'll also take pictures so you can see exactly what we're dealing with...

Another idea; Look into decorative paper adhered to various sizes of poster board, which is then adhered to the mirror in a pattern of your choosing. You could cover the whole wall or leave some mirror "squares" showing.
