Area rug for large room
Any suggestions on an economical rug for a large room? Our living room is 15 ft. by 23 ft. Wouldn't even an 8x10 area rug look too small?
I'm afraid something as large as I need is going to be very expensive. Has anyone ever gone to a carpet store and just bought carpeting and had them bind the edges? Is this any cheaper?
Another option I was thinking of was to have 2 seating areas with 2 separate rugs. One area centered around the fireplace with 2 side chairs and the other a larger area by the couch and media center.
The room currently has hardwood floors which are pretty but the room is cold in the winter and I also think the area rug would tie the furniture together. Thanks for any suggestions!

Yes! go to a carpeting store and check the carpet remnants. often they have remnants that are already bound. If I remember correctly, january is usually a good time for this type of shopping. often on new years day!

sg is right, you can find some great stuff in the remnant section. You can have one large rug, two smaller rugs and rugs on rugs. If you get one large remnant, you may eventually find some smaller pieces to anchor those two different seating areas.

I also had a relatively large family room and opted for two area rugs that matched in two seating areas because the standard one 8x10 rug would have looked funny. One of my rugs was an 8x10 and the other was the next standard size down (I think 5x8).

what about using area rugs over carpet? My carpets are all the same bland beige. I would like to add color to my daughter's room by adding pink or purple. I thought of an area rug under bed that would extend outward to add color to her room.
Would the rugs on top of carpet ruin the carpet?

depends on the backing of the area rug and the condition of the carpeting underneath. It is not the most ideal thing to do, but can be done. If it is not being constantly pounded down on by lots of walking, I think it would be fine. The bedroom situation sounds like it would be worth a try. you can always ask at the carpeting store and get their opinion.

I don't know about ruining the carpet, but sgresident offers good comments with which I agree.
I have an area rug over the boring beige wall-to-wall in my dining room. It doesn't get a lot of foot track, but gets enough so that the area rug moves a bit and becomes rippled with bumps here and there. There has been less rippling after I put a rubber nonslip mat between the area rug and wall-to-wall, but the area rug still moves. Not an ideal situation at all (never mind being somewhat of a safety issue regarding tripping potential.)

Some good info here:
Choose an Interior Area Rug
I like the idea of making 2 different areas.

If you go to a carpet store that carries commercial carpet ;you will be surprised at some of the designs they carry that will maike a very good area rug when the dges are bound which any carpet store can do.Some rweallymnice patterns are avialable in commercial carpet. They can also add a non-slip backing.
