I recently experienced a burglary via through my basement window. The only replacement basement windows I've seen are the white slide windows. Does anyone know if these windows come in different colors? Are there different brands to consider?

What type of window(s) does the house have now? And have you considered having the glass replaced and adding security hardware? Instead of replacing the whole window.

I looked at four companies locally back in October when I was replacing my basement windows. My windows are horizontal sliders. I checked the Better Business Bureau on all four before moving forward.

Of the four companies I considered, one manufactured the windows locally-- which was appealing in the case of providing warranty replacment/repair. Of the other three that manufactured their windows out of state, Champion Windows seemed to be the most reliable and best quality. They also had the highest prices. They had been in business for over 50 years. That says a lot. Several offered 0% financing for 6 -12 months.

I found out that some "fly by night" window companies might offer the best deal, but they are also the type to close up shop and reopen with a new name and product....leaving homeowners with useless warrantys since they went out of business and no longer sell that brand of window. Homeowners are left to fight it out with the manufacturer and it can be a mess.

Before you sign any contract, put any money down, etc, ask to read the documentation they will be asking you to sign. Take it home and read through it with questions clearly marked so you can get answers. If they are not willing to give you blank copies of the paperwork, don't buy from that company. They're most likely hiding something.

I've seen white, off white, tan, and forest green vinyl windows. Just call around.

Good luck.
