Default Fireplace Help

This is my fireplace.

The tiles on the ground are NOT in place yet. We aren't sure if we like them. Any opinions on them? Does anyone have any suggestions on some other type of tile to use? The color of the wall is going to change and it is going to be a light wood floor instead of carpet around them.

I like your tiles but they look too matchy matchy. And honestly, I'm not an expert by any means, that was just my first impression. I would possibly go with more of a contrast...

I agree with contrast.

Take a look at this site for slate. I think something like the last tile sample "Vibrant Kashmir" is nice. It gives contrast yet picks up the color in your original tiles. But I would pick something that picks up the colors you have in your furniture/home and the original tile. This would look great with wood floors, and changing the wall color is a good idea. Perhaps something a little more neutral.

My first thought- find out what kind of rock (granite?) is the surround and have a slab cut to be the hearth (one piece).
My secound choice- slate with some contrasting tones as others have stated.

We found some really cool fireplace ideas at hgtv here: primed4design.blogspot.com/2008/10/design-tip-of-week-102708-fixed-up.html

How about a black slate, like the second photo?

I agree the current, while very nice, is a bit too matched to the fireplace-

Or keep th tile you have now, and paint the fireplace brick white-

I don't really care for them - they match the fireplace too much. I would go for something darker that provides more of a contrast to the gorgeous stone.

I agree with the other comments above. Too matchy matchy.
Please note that grout joints become dirty over time. I would suggest using a 1 piece granite, marble, limestone or slate hearth. You can search some fabrication shops in your area - ask them about remnants that fit your size. The cost shouldnt be so expensive and you will get a much nicer finished product. Good luck

I am a sucker for a raised hearth. In this case, I would have a mason come in and do that while I am doing things with the fireplace...but that gets into more money and isnt always feasible.

I agree with someone else here that mentioned contrast. You said your floors would be a light wood? Maybe something a bit darker, then? Here are some photos I found (I think that the last one resembles your choice):
