Whoa, slow your roll DesertSun. I didn't find his post insulting at all. He didn't put down anyone in this "economic depression". Just because someone is affording their home and being responsible, and wants to "dream" about doing something to remodel in a contest, doesn't make them insensitive. Yowzas.
Choice though? Depends...is your kitchen decent? Basement finished? I say go for the man-cave!
Though it'd actually be a study or library. A pool table, shelves on the wall with a ladder going to the top, freestanding shelves, hunting trophies, and that sort of thing.
Much as I would enjoy a new kitchen someday, ours is prefectly functional for now. We don't have a basement and dh would like a nice, large shed out back for a pottery studio. I think $25,000 would be enough for a stunning studio/man cave.
In these harsh economic times, sometimes all we can afford are our dreams. In this recession and in previous ones, my friends and I have cut back on gift-giving and buy each other a lottery ticket for special occasions, and then a drink, over which we daydream about what we would do if we won.
It only gets dangerous when you do so much daydreaming that your imagination shifts from "If" you win to "When"! Then its time to come back to reality.
