Recently we wallpapered our kitchen and would now like to do something with dining room. These 2 rooms are together(no wall seperating them). I don't have enough wallpaper to do dining room part so I am thinking of doing wallpaper and paint. Here is my questions....Do I wallpaper top half of walls and paint bottom half or the other way around? I am going to seperate the wallpaper and paint by a 3 inch piece of wall trim. What is the norm for seperating the 2? Do I divide the height of the wall to do this? I have never done anything like this before, but I am so sick of solid white walls!! Thanks for any help!!

The answer is ... Whichever way you want to do it. Maybe it depends on how much wallpaper you have, because you'd use less if you paper the wall from the baseboard up to the chair rail.

Just don't divide the wall in half. Most chair rails I've seen are about the height of the back of a chair (hence the name), about 3 feet or a third of the way up from the floor.

I think there is a clear answer if you have art you wish to hang in the dining room and your wallpaper is busy - art does not generally look good on busy wallpaper - especially if it is busy art. I always opt to have either very netural wallpaper on top of the chair rail or paint the area above the chair rail. For a more contemporary, neutral look paint the area above and below the rail the same color and paint your chair rail the next deepest tone of that same color.

You probably want to consider any pattern in the wallpaper too. Is it something that will look OK at the bottom, or will it look "funny" on the bottom.
