some trends we are seeing in new home construction are:

composite decking/vinyl railing (maintenance free products are gaining in popularity, regardless of their cost)

vinyl cedar shake siding (lately receiving requests for bids on log siding, for those wanting a more
affordable alternative to a real log home)

geothermal heating & cooling

spray foam insulation

more & more seeing hardwood floors in kitchens

oil-rubbed bronze door hardware

bold colors, we've seen bold reds and greens being used

where we are, the trend for the kitchen corner cabinet is raised, with glass front.. granite is still king

I don't know if it's a coming trend but what I would LIKE to see is;
Smaller houses (>2,000 sq ft)
Single story houses
Roof covered patios and porches
One good sized eating area rather than a separate nook & formal dining room
Anything but granite counters/stainless steel appliances
Porcelain tiles of all kinds

And if cultured marble and vinyl flooring in the bathroom makes a comeback I'll be ON-TREND!!

I think paneling will make a comeback...no not necessarily the '70's family room kind but higher end exotic woods like zebrawood or birdseye maple for that kind of mid-century modern look, especially used as one accent wall.

And who do you think could afford exotic hardwoods? Everything I see every day is showing people just choosing the cheapest possible way to make an improvement even if it does not really look good.

I wish you were right. But I even see cherry wood sales slowing despite people still liking it best only to choose oak because it is cheaper. Birdseye cost about 3 times more then maple and zebrawood cost 4 times more but they both sure are pretty. Personally I love purple heart wood.

Sounds like you got good taste !

Thanks! It's sad but true. Most people just want the biggest house possible and couldn't care less about the quality of materials or design. I'd never heard of purple heart wood. That's beautiful.

Yes, lets max out the square footage and damn the torpedoes! That trend is still here, sad to report. The really sad trend is the glut of houses on the market due to forclosure.

Were you naked in the shower in that pic or what?

Seriously, I think the "Home Interior Design and Decorating Forum" needs a "chat" thread like they have in other forums ( e.g. "Whats For Dinner" in "Food", "Crazy Camp" in RE etc). Someplace warm and cozy where we can prop our feet up (on a fabulous ottoman of course!) just shoot the breeze, post photos, laugh at crazy ideas and rave about the good. No posts removed (unless they violate the TOS of course) and no infractions for being "off-topic".

Any good-hearted, design-motivated, mods want to help us out? (We need a mod to get a "sticky").

kshe95girl, this thread has been the closest to that idea that I have seen in this forum. Any great ideas for the thread title?

Not saying that I like it, but I see it coming......its hasnt been in since the 80's, so its a color that is due for a revisit.
I love it! I painted my master bedroom and bathroom grey 2 or 3 yrs ago and it looks fabulous with white crown molding/baseboards/window trim/doors. Very clean and classic look, IMHO. I was so happy to see "Elegant Homes" magazine this month with designers who purchased a beautiful late 1800's home and the very first thing these gentlemen did was paint every room in this house in grey. Gorgeous. (It has to be the right shade though!) I secretly pat myself on the back thinking maybe I was a little ahead of the times, ha!
