From all your post I see you stuck in the 70's, LOL... (joke no harm intended)
I use to like dark rooms in my earliers days. When I was a Vamp...If I could have it my way at this moment in time, I'll have the back of my house facing a lake or pond so I don't have to put up blinds. Just let all that vatimin C in without worrying about the on lookers.

If you're relying on sunlight for vitamin C, you're going to wind up with scurvy!!

Maybe I am but all that light blasting in all the time would make me nauseous. Not only that, but I am a "floor person" (i.e. I sit on the floor most of the time), and bare floors are cold and uncomfortable. I wonder why people sacrifice comfort for being "fashionable", I don't get it.

Should the color on the walls depend on the stain of the floor?
What kind of natural light do you get through the big wondows, and what kind of artificial light are you planning? It makes a difference when you're considering how to not have it come out too dark overall.

I would definitely remove the carpet. As for the wood paneling, it will all depend on the style you are going for.
As many said, that is some nice wood you have there and, judging by the picture, it doesn't look like veneers, but the real deal. As it is now, you can definitely use it as an accent if you go for a nice contemporary country style, or a nice vintage look.
If you like something more modern, trim that wood with something like stainless steel accents and decorate with very clean line, minimalist furniture for a chic "industrial" feel.

Way to go. I really loved the wood, but this change just transformed the room! Awesome...keep us posted on the progress. I can't wait to see how you make the place your own.
