The finish does look kinda country...is it painted our unfinished wood...it's hard to tell in the pic.

I also thought it was a secondhand find... and it screams country to me.

Black could change that though...

It's more colonial than country. It's the wainscoting in the back of the display area that's making people think it looks country, but colonial pieces also have wainscoting.

If you fill it with enough modern things in a contemporary arrangement to deflect the eye form the wainscoting, it won't look country.

Multi color Fiesta ware will make it stand out and useful. You can get differnt color, shape and sizes of bowls, pitchers, and plates. It's a nice piece.

Paint the INSIDE of it black. That'll de-country-fi it. and then it makes displaying whatever easier!

I would paint the interior a med. gray or chocolate brown and fill it with white pieces like plates and modern looking vases, etc... A sort of West Elm look. Good luck!

Exactly - that is why I suggested black with silver things - keeping the interior objects all one tone will give the piece a more modern feel. I didn't realize that you wanted it white - but I think you can keep it rather transitional looking by painting the interior and keeping objects the same tone. Be sure to post pictures when you are done - I know it will look great.

There's nothing "country" about it. Its lines are clean and classic.

I'd use it for storage for stuff I already have -- glasses, bowls, pitchers, etc. The prettier stuff can go on top; use the bottom for utilitarian storage.
