I was recently given about 20 afghans made maybe 10-15 years ago but NEVER used even once. I would like to sell them, but a friend of mind (also, a baby boomer) said that "nobody wants" afghans anymore. Is this true?
Since I still use afghans and don't knit or crochet myself, I have no idea if people are still purchasing afghans or not. Can someone clue me in????

I've never known anyone to purchase an afghan, ever. They are typically something you make for yourself, even now.

If you are looking for a money-making venture, I think you'll need to find something else. If you just want to get rid of these, maybe donate them to a hospital.

I agree with Kodaka. To verify it, I searched the internet. Afghans sell for $7 to $20. And there are no bids for any that are in ebay. It's unlikely that you'll be able to sell them.

If you are really bent on selling them why not post them for free on craigslist? Give yourself a time limit, say two weeks. Post them a few times at a fair price, whatever hasn't sold in 2 weeks donate. There may not be a huge market for them but you'd be surprised the type of cr@P people will buy if it's priced right

Ebay seems to be loaded with people selling patterns for making afghans. Seems that not that many are sold--altho one lady who does great looking work is selling hers starting at $49 and who knows what she gets those prices up to.
Maybe afghans are those items mostly made--as mentioned before--for someone to make for family members and rarely made to sell.
Ah well....I'll just keep them and give them away one by one I guess. I just cannot see giving them away to strangers as they were made with love and given from the heart to me.

You can't see giving them away to strangers but would have had no problem selling them to strangers!?!?!? That's funny! Thanks for the laugh!

The person who gave the afghans to me said to not sell them for less than X number of dollars. She said if I didn't need them to sell them. What's so funny about that? I don't get your sense of humor frankly...but chuckle away.

I'd think there would be a market in "upscale" executive types who have mothers/fathers/grandparents in nursing homes. The upscale types do not have the time to knit/crochet afghans themselves (and probably couldn't if they tried), so like everything else, they have no problem PAYING for someone else to do it for them.

I'd try to sell them for sure. Use a lot of "upscale" buzz words like "artisan" and "fine arts" and "fiber arts" and "hand crafted". I'm sure there is a market out there. You just have to tap it.

I've actually sold Afghans but it was years ago. I still crochet because baby Afghans from time to time because they make great gifts for baby showers. But I don't sell them. I give them away.

I taught my grandmother to crochet and she started turning out beautiful white Afghans for all the family members....about 30 people through the grandkids. It brought her such joy. I don't crochet very often now because I have cats and I don't want cat hair in the blankets. LOL. .....and kitties just love crocheted Afghans. The yarn is like catnip to them.

That said handmade afgans are different from the commercail ones. Just has handmade quilts are. Its depends on the buyer really; like coins. Those that like them do ;others have no interest.
