Here's what happend to me once. My belt broke on a 99 Ford ZX2 and a kid was running the his Dad's auto repair shop. he told me I had an interference engine and valves were damaged, it'll cost more to fix than the cars worth. I said okay, I'll leave it here and you guys can have it or sell it for scrap. I never gave him the title. 2 months go by and the Dad starts running the shop again and says I'll fix it for $500, I said go ahead. Turns out I think the kid bull-chitted me because he wanted the car.
First thing you have to determine is if you have a interference or non-interference engine then go from there. maybe go to a Honda forumn on the web and start asking if your year, make and model is an interference engine. If it isn't take it to another shop and have them put a belt on, or do it yourself, get a Haynes manual and it'll be a pain in the neck as you'll probably have to pull AC, water pump, sepentine belt etc, to get to it. It's really not that hard , just takes patience. Otherwise if you really like the car you may be able to get a low milage good junkyard motor for around $400 or $500 and put it in yourself or have someone do it. $2000 is ridiculous. I can't remeber the name of the place that fixed mine but he was off of 49th St. up around the area of 62nd. Ave in Pinellas Park, just West of 49th.
I could tell you off the top of my head that the 2.0 DOHC engine in your car was a non-interference (freewheeling) design.
Hondas vary. Technically all Hondas are Interference engines, but some might argue that they are not true interference engines, some would argue that Honda engines can "become interference engines" when the valves get a lot of build up. It is kind of confusing. If the OP comes back and gives me the year and model, I will further elaborate.
I know this is the "tampa bay forum", but if the mods dont mind, I am more than happy to provide a quick answer.

Yeah, at the time I had never heard such a thing as Interference or non-Inter. I got the car for free, the original owner was going to give it to a home for unwed mothers, but gave it to me just to get it out of the yard. Almost 70 k later and it's still running good. I figure when the motor goes , I'll get a low milage j-yard motor, although I've never replaced a front wheel drive motor.
If your timing belt did in fact break, you could have done some damage to the engine. The timing belt keeps the engine crankshaft (which controls piston movement) in sync with the camshaft (which controls the valves allowing air in and exhuasting air at the precise time).
When you break your timing belt, The crankshaft and piston rod assembly still function normally, but your camshaft is no longer opening and closing valves. Which could cause the piston to collide with the valves damaging the pistons, valves, and possibly the head, depending on the vehicle
What year/make/model is your vehicle? An engine with a free-wheeling design could go relatively unharmed in the event of a timing belt breaking. Exaclty what did you hear when the car died?
It is a vital part of your engine and you need to make sure it is replaced when reccomended (depending on vehicle).
To those of you wondering, the answer is Yes... I know everything.

You are a funny one smart guy. I don't like Honda's as it is. When a car reaches a point in age and miles then it's time to let go and move on. Now if were talking a LS2 or LS3 V8 Corvette i would be ready to talk all night long.

Grow up boy.
Problem is that the OP's 01 Accord is still worth in the $5K-$8K range so putting a few $K into repairing the motor is in his best financial interest, if the car were only worth $1000-$2000 then scrapping it would be an easier choice to make.
Selling it at this point without the repairs would relegate the car to a max of $1K-$2k value

Grow up? Sorry I am not a middle aged man with a corvette, cruising around town in my tommy bahama shirt, thinking I am cool with my overpriced hunk of ****. I could buy a mustang, throw $2500 at it and blow the doors off LS2 and LS3 vettes water all day. Used to love the looks on Viper and Z06 owners when my 93 mustang made them look like they were driving an 87 corolla.
I dont like Hondas either, and I USED to be a Ford guy, German cars are now my thing. But to offer absolutely no advice other than to get rid of it because it is a Honda is preposterous.
I dont really hate corvettes to be honest, just people who talk about them like they are something spectacular.

I'm over the fast car thing. I have an 08 BMW 535i sport. Nothing special. It is twin turbo, 300 hp, so its not slow, but its not fast. Thinking about trading it in for a used M3 or a jeep wangler.
I appreciate fast and modded cars, just not my thing right now. I don't have the time to maintain them like I did when I built my 500hp naturally aspirated mustang from
the ground up in my parents garage after highschool.
My father is on his second C5 vette, they dont do anything for me. If I could afford it I would maybe consider a new ZR1.
Ya it sure does sitting in clogged traffic at every light. Glad i moved back to Danashores. Just as bad or even worse in Tampa as anywhere you drive it's heavy traffic, at least west Pasco had less traffic other than US19.
