I owned CR-V. Great vehicle. GREAT. Element is nothing more than CR-V with different body on it. Hence, you'll have slightly better mpg out of CR-V, as Element is higher air drag coefficient. AWD is same. Personally, the only thing that kills Element for me is that gargantuan dashboard. They could have almost fit 3rd row in there instead.
If you live in farmland, get Element. The "niche market" they mentioned was yuppies in CA, and everywhere else, with inclination for outdoor sports. Big spiel was that you can fit surf boards in and out in a heartbeat, it opens do wide. Bikes.
Best I know, interior can be spray hosed. Seats out, of course. Farmland, remember?
DO NOT hose out an Element . You will damage the wiring. It's called a wipe down interior..not hose out. I have an 05 Manual transmission FWD element. I traded in a pick up for it and it was suitable for my needs. Would I buy one now.NO...it isn't the greatest thing since sliced bread and it really isn't very well built. Too many problems to mention..fortunatly I got it all fixed under warranty or I would have dumped it.
I wouldn't buy a CRV either...plenty of other choices on the market today.
FWIW the Element has been discontinued, so you might get a good deal on the used ones. Never drove one, but the CRV tends to be noisy, make sure you take an extended test drive in either.

I have a 1998 CRV -I've had it since '98 and I still love it. Not a bit noisy - in fact, it's so quiet I say it purrs. Just had my mechanic look it over because I'm going on a road trip and my concern was that it's getting older and did he think it would make it. He said this car is in great shape and will be for a long time. Was thinking of getting a new one in spring because my confidence was lagging due to it's age but he says hang on to it.
The new CRVs take some getting use to. I like the style of the older models much better.
The Element was a cute car - too bad they stopped making it.
The Honda dealers in this area have super deals on the remaining 2012 CRVs now, which are much nicer than the 2013 CRVs.
Actually the 2012 and 2013 are the same. My favorite is the 2007-2011 model. The 2012/13 body shape is ugly in my opinion. Would have looked nice had Honda not designed it to look like a dog when it takes a dump.
I have owned 4 or 5 CRV's as a second vehicle. One of the reasons I purchase them is that they are reliable and I can tow them flat behind my motorhome. Automatic trans and no special enhancements.
Presently own a 2010, I have had no problems with it, just regular maint.
