Safety
The judges take into account each vehicle's ability to help the driver avoid a crash, as well as the secondary safety measures that protect its occupants during an accident.
Value
Each vehicle's price and equipment levels are compared with those of vehicles in the same market segment
.

Using their criteria, I can see it. My criteria, and based on comments so far, the criteria of the buying public, may be different. At least in this comparison, the criteria are fairly clear and can be used to justify the decision made. The buyers of these types of vehicles just need to be aware of the significant differences (other than size) of the vehicles compared.
Their criteria is Bullshart.

Should be more like:

Mechanical Aptitude
Off-road ability
Capacity (within class)
On-road ability
Towing
Comfort and Refinement (within class)

If it was 4x4 or 4 Wheelin' magazine. The general consumer really doesn't care for most of those capabilities

I read the article the other day at the dentist's office. Had to chuckle that the CRV won, but the Macan was a "finalist."

Even with their criteria, it's simply a flawed methodology, because no one in their right mind would cross shop some of the choices in that group.

The CRV and most SUVs are just replacements for the maligned minivan.

value was a criteria, and they choose only 1 vehicle? Why even throw luxury vehicles in there?

The only thing most people care about on that list is Comfort and Refinement and Capacity. Most people don't tow or go off road. And most people don't care how they handle or how fast they go, within reason. Again, just look at the previous winners.

The CRV has long been considered a great SUV/CUV by MT and most of the automotive press. I find it no surprise it would be declared a winner here.

The thing is... winning this contest doesn't necessarily mean much to anyone except Honda who can market it as an award winner.

Owned the first gen CR-V and loved it. It was affordable, roomy, reliable, fuel efficient (30mpg) and cool. I mean how many cars come with a built in picnic table????

If I'm in the market for an SUV the CR-V would be #1 on my list. It may not be the best at anything but good at everything. And thats the criteria most shoppers use when buying a car which explains why CR-V has been the best selling SUV for so long. The same criteria MT uses apparently.
