The Criteria Design Advancement
The judges are looking for well-executed exterior and interior styling, innovative vehicle packaging, and good selection and use of materials. Engineering Excellence
Total vehicle concept and execution; clever solutions to packaging, manufacturing, and dynamics; and cost-effective technology that benefits consumers. Performance of Intended Function
How well the vehicle does the job its planners, designers, and engineers intended it to do. Efficiency
The judges consider fuel efficiency and carbon footprint size relative to the vehicle's competitive set. Safety
The judges take into account each vehicle's ability to help the driver avoid a crash, as well as the secondary safety measures that protect its occupants during an accident. Value
Each vehicle's price and equipment levels are compared with those of vehicles in the same market segment.
Using their criteria, I can see it. My criteria, and based on comments so far, the criteria of the buying public, may be different. At least in this comparison, the criteria are fairly clear and can be used to justify the decision made. The buyers of these types of vehicles just need to be aware of the significant differences (other than size) of the vehicles compared.
The only thing most people care about on that list is Comfort and Refinement and Capacity. Most people don't tow or go off road. And most people don't care how they handle or how fast they go, within reason. Again, just look at the previous winners.
Owned the first gen CR-V and loved it. It was affordable, roomy, reliable, fuel efficient (30mpg) and cool. I mean how many cars come with a built in picnic table????
If I'm in the market for an SUV the CR-V would be #1 on my list. It may not be the best at anything but good at everything. And thats the criteria most shoppers use when buying a car which explains why CR-V has been the best selling SUV for so long. The same criteria MT uses apparently.
