My Accord V6 EXL has 98,000 miles on it. This will be 3rd set of tires coming up. Michelin was OE; then Coopers. Now my private mechanic (not dealer) says new tires needed within a few months, plus he wants to replace the struts at the same time. Will probably total $1200 (wow). Do you guys have any idea why ? he didn't say they were worn or anything, maybe he is upselling? I'd rather just replace the tires, of course. The entire car is well cared for and mint. thx

98,000 miles for a 3rd set of times doesn't seem out of the norm.

Check the tread depth yourself.

As for the struts, I would go get a second opinion. I haven't heard of too many cases where people replace struts unless there is an immediate problem with them.

I would be more concerned with replacing the timing belt and water pump since you are at roughly 100,000 miles.

Thank you "Heading"; that's about what I figured also re the struts, sounded odd to me. I replaced the timing belt, last year. I bought this car brand new, well maintained. Also wondered about the water pump. Will take your advice and get another opinion. I was born at night, but it wasn't last night.

Struts are the modern shock absorber. They help control oscillation of of the tire on a vertical plane. Ever seen an car porposing on bumps? 100K miles IS a fairly common number for recommending replacement. But it IS technically an upsell if tire wear is OK, no leaks or noise. Frequently the aftermarket (AM) struts will last longer and ride better than the original. Never forget...the OEM manufacturer buys/builds the cheapest part they can. Just economics of scale. The AM companies specialize in building the best product. I'm sure someone will disagree with me and that's fine. Just my 40+ years of experience. A name brand aftermarket suspension part frequently has design improvements. The OEM stays the "cheapest".

Not sure if this advice is too late but my 2003 Accord I4 has 235 thousand miles on it driving on crappy New England roads. The shocks are still 100% original and I have no plans to replace them.

Not too late, appreciate it. What evolved is that I went into my local repair shop (which has always been one of the best here), for an oil change. I asked the young man at the desk (who has been there 10 yrs. but is not the owner), to check the wear on my tires. The owner was not around. He said the guys in the back said no way, the tires have at least another 30 to 40% wear on them, so wait awhile. He said that hardly anyone replaces struts, 'who told you that'? I said your boss/owner, and he was surprised. He said new struts would be at least $1200, plus new Michelin tires another $600. I almost choked on my coffee; and left a happy camper. Geesh, a couple of months ago I was out looking at new cars for cryin' out loud. (About half of my 98,000 miles was also driving on crappy New England roads.)

Total that day: $32.

Thanks so much guys, really appreciate all your advice.

Sounds like it's time for you to find a mechanic to service your car.
