Building a system of PVC pipes to lower in. The one at the end I capped and drilled lots of 1/4 holes. The other end I'm hooking up to the exhaust of my shop vac. I'll let that run for about four days.

I want to pump out the bad air without kicking up dust.

CO detector and Radon detector are not in the safe zone right now.

Anyone have a canary I can borrow?

Doesn't look like the canary is guaranteed to come back, so no

Good luck with the exploring. I had the joy several years ago of working on several old homes in southeast Missouri that had hidden rooms, secret compartments, etc. but nothing quite like this. Apparently that area of Missouri was home of a (locally) well-known craftsman who specialized in hidden things.

The Underground Railroad was the VERY FIRST thing that came to my mind when I read the OP's first post.

The "small tunnel" you refer to...is it the the round hole in the collar below the cover? Or something larger down in the body of the void below?

I think it's a cistern/well too. Makes sense since the rock has been carved out. I've seen this in many historic homes.

Isn't it posible that the house that is currently there was built over an older house that might have included a stop on the Underground RR??

I will keep an eye on this thread, I can't wait to hear what you find out.

I have a sick mind, my mind went to what a perfect house for a serial killer, I watch WAY too much crime drama.

You can rent a utility/commercial grade exhaust/ventilation fan at just about any rental yard. It may be too late, but, I think you will find that your shop vac does not have the cfms to do the job. I hope that you decide to get a real fan going before anyone enters. This "thing" fails the underground railroad test not only by date( years), but, by sophistication and location.
