What are the steps for painting a new patio door with unfinished wood on the interior?

What kind of paint/brand?

And any suggestions for color?

Here are some pics:

Oh also, should I paint the trim the same as the door. And eventually the countertops will be changed to a lighter color quartz or maybe concrete.

Hi Sheenie2000,
That is a nice door! There are many brands of paint and without knowing what is in your area, I would only suggest a finish: eggshell. It just lasts better. You will obviously need exterior paint on the outside.
I can recommend that you use linseed oil primer on ALL edges, top and bottom and the doors, two coats and sand between coats! It is a mineral spirits cleanup, but, it is well worth it for a cool door like that! Take as much hardware off as you can prior to priming and painting.

It really depends on what you want to do. I'd personally either paint it white to blend in smoothly with the cabinets and trim, or you could go with a stain for a more bold approach.

Paint to match trim?

Sand
Sanding sealer
Sand again
Prime (oil based)
Sand again
Paint (oil based/ two coats) Try to use a foam roller instead of a brush- it will leave a much smoother finish.

I'm sorry to say that the reformulated clear finishes ( like spar varnish) just do not stand up to the sun the way they used to. Maybe a solid color on the outside and a faux finish on the inside!
