Why doesn't everyone put in crown moulding? (installing, family room, kitchen)

i think its tacky and waste of money in new houses; if it was original to the time period and the house was full of ornate trim i could understand.
some feel that crown moulding makes your house more valuable or more refined. i just happen to disagree.
I agree with you; usually it just looks stupid or at best, unnecessary. My house's crown molding is indeed original so I'm keeping it but like I said before not putting any up anywhere else. My house was built in 1957 in a "traditional" style so it's not an MCM. I'm a big fan of "original." My house has many of its original surfaces and fixtures; we're in the midst of uncovering the original tile floor in the foyer. Aaaaah, brown mosaic!

It's actually not that hard. Since our homes were built perfectly square and plumb and the corners are all exactly 90 degrees, all you have to do is measure properly (duh), then miter each piece at 45 degrees with the acute side away from the corner and a 22.5 degree back bevel. You don't have to worry about any bulges or deviations in the wall that are too subtle to see with the naked eye but NOT too subtle to find when trying to get a piece of pine crown moulding to lay flush against it. It's also not a big deal to get perfect joinery on long walls on the first try. Caulking and painting it is no sweat either.
Personally I wouldn't purchase a home without crown. To go with just looks cold and unfinished to me. Crown moulding (like area rugs) can really make a house feel like a home.
We have just place crown moulding in most areas of the lower level of our new home and we love it. To us crown moulding is dependent on how you want your home to feel and look. We are being specific to design and the way we intend to decorate. Someone said that you need to be a professional at it and not to have gaps in the corner, this is true. Even to professionals, crown moulding can be frustrating especially if the measurement isnt right or the wall is uneven. You would have to caulk, sand down and paint just to make sure the seams don't show. We much prefer crown moulding made from plaster of paris or drywall as its done in Europe.

If it is built to the house way back when then it is appropriate, and yours is in the formal areas which is appropriate, and it probably looks nice too !!
We can thank HGTV for constantly reminding us of ...
Oh I like the crown moulding...., that is just about as tired as the SS thing with granite.......
My sister was 22 when looking for a house, I don't think she even knew what crown moulding was......lol, like most young girls, they don't know.... no offense to girls now.

It's beautiful, I get lots of compliments on it. People always ask where I got it. I'm like "Uhhh I dunno where it came from, it came with the house; been there since it was built." They always look disappointed. It's quite ornate and not what I would have chosen but there is lots in this house I could say that about (like the pink bathroom). But it is what it is.

I haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaate HGTV. I think it has ruined large swathes of the suburbs here.

Actually, it's obliterated people's minds because they all think they can do it themselves- HGTV said they could!. And I'm sure we've all seen at least one DIY disaster!
We've got a lot of sloping ceiling, and crown molding looks like arse if the ceiling isn't remotely close to a 90 degree angle from the walls.
