I just pulled out my "gutter guards" since they appeared to be doing more harm then good during heavy rainfalls.

There is now a 1/2 inch air gap between the roof and the roofing tiles (where the gutter guards were). Is this okay? Should I put some sealant of something there to try and close that gap?

See picture. Thanks.

Hi Frank,
It looks like the back side of the gutter( against the fascia board) is lifting up the bottom of the shingles causing some cupping. The shingles need to lay flat against the underlying roof surface and drain straight into the gutter. Can you drop that gutter down so the shingles are not curled/lifted up at the bottom? You have good extension beyond the roof edge!

Sure. I will try to lower the gutter. The shingles seem to be stuck in the curved up position after a few years of being like that. Should I glue them down to make contact with the roof? Do I need to put any fabric or protectant down first?

Thanks.

Hi Frank,
It looks like you have some sort of edge/drip metal as part of the roofing assembly. You should notice some felt paper underlayment already under the shingles. The heat of the summer should have some effect on "relaxing" the shingle material and hopefully it will settle back down after a short while. Don't put any sealant there, the felt paper needs to drain if ever called into service due to a failure of the outer roofing material.

I will double check but I am pretty sure there is just plain wood under the shingles at that location (no felt paper or anything else). Does that sound normal?

No.
The typical comp shingle roof assembly will be( starting at the bottom, going up): Sheathing, drip/edge metal, felt paper underlayment(overlaps the drip/edge metal), roofing shingles.
It almost kinda ,sorta looks like I see it up against the back side of the gutter in your photo, right above the edge/drip metal; are you sure its not there? I can't actually tell though...
If you can't see any underlayment, there is not much you can do now as it needs to be installed prior to the shingles.

Thats what I am afraid of. If they installed the roof AFTER the gutter guards were put in then they might not have put anything down in that area.
