A big storm just went through. It had a lot of rain and lighting. My a/c unit starting making a loud clicking sound. It was faster than one click per second. Maybe 2 clicks per second. I quickly hopped out of bed and turned the thermostat up to turn the unit off.

I went out to look at the outside unit where the sound was coming from. I didn't see anything out of the ordinary.

I waited 15 minutes and turned the thermostat back down so I could look at the unit while it made the noise. Of course, it's now not making the noise.

Does anyone know what this might be and should I have someone out to look at it? What I am afraid of is to go to work tomorrow and the unit starts acting up when no one is home.

Thanks

No, it wasn't rain. Thanks texdav for offering ideas.

The storm was letting up at the time the clicking started. After I turned the thermostat up and went outside, the rain was light. I mentioned the rain b/c I thought the tremendous downpour might have affected the contactor or some other part.

It is entirely possible that something fell into the unit and got caught up in the fan blade. The blade turns fast enough that it can bounce stuff around indefinitely. Once you shut it off and the blade stopped, whatever it was fell to the bottom.

Check the fan blade. The other possibility is contactor chatter. Something that happens when something gets in between the contacts or when the contacts go bad.
