So, around four something this morning, after being awakened by a Corgi-shaped missile (guess she doesn't like storms) I was thinking about the new HGTV contest. The idea for this thread hit.

What would you do with the 75,000 dollar prize? Has to be spent on the house, can be inside/out and can be remodel or new space, DIY/Pro or combo of the two. Feel free to post a pic of the house in question if you want.

Me? New roof for the house, metal, of course. Yank off the evil vinyl and patch/paint the old cedar siding. Lay wide plank flooring in five of the downstairs rooms that haven't had the flooring redone already. Strip the upstairs floors and stain. Insulate under the floors downstairs (brrrr! No sub and no insulation and old floors makes for a chilly time!). Redo the pool deck and add the changing room/snack bar we've been planning. Fence the entire property. New garage doors/windows/insulation and new doors for the attached shed. That's it... for now, I think.

Here's the house:

Go off grid!
HGTV and lipstick are way over rated!

I'd knock down the current mud room, and build a new addition that contained a clothes closet, a pantry, and a bathroom.

If there were any money leftover (doubtful!), I'd replace my oil furnace with an oil-backed heat pump and the necessary ductwork.

I agree with K'Ledge. After my recent experience with the local electric company, solar power is looking more and more enticing.

My House:

http://www.city-data.com/forum/membe...snowhouse.html

What I would do with 75K:

Complete window restoration/preservation.

Buy the range of my dreams.

Hire someone to patch plaster and paint.

Landscaping. If I had any $$$ left over I would include an outdoor fireplace and pizza oven.

A girl can dream.

Yeah, but solar's so damned expensive. We looked at a place in NM that was solar/wind hybrid and seemed to be easier and cheaper to get into.

I never said 'nuthin' 'bout no lipstick- neither me, nor my house own any I just want the money, lol.

BeeYOUtifull, Plaidmom! So, it didn't come with a range just the right size for a pair of Germanic siblings, say.. one Hansel and Gretel?
So, what's the range o' your dreams?

Funny!

I know, the house is really screaming for an AGA, don't you think?

I left room for a 36" in the reno plans but now see that I could swing a 48". I could "settle" for a Viking or a Wolf.

Also amused that solar power came up. Solar hot water is on tap!!! All those pretty copper tubes......

When it comes to solar, we did tons o' research and solar hot water gives the average homeowner the most bang for the buck.

$75K... hmmm...

Redo kitchen (currently a builder basic with an incredibly poor layout). Finish basement. Hardwood floors on first floor. Redo master and guest bath...

As far as dream ranges go -- check out Fratelli. AJ Madison carries them (or at least can order them) and they get pretty good reviews. Beautiful (like AGA), but seemingly a lot more affordable. Heard that may require a plumber to do a little adjustment (built for Italy, not America) - but enough people seem to be buying them and liking them that it must be doable...

Fratelli Onofri FRRYC905SBUBR 36" Pro-Style Dual Fuel Range with 5 Sealed Burners, 3.7 cu. ft Manual Clean Convection Oven and 3 Glass Panel Oven Door: Burgundy with Brass Trim

I'd have to move and put it into a different house. I'll never get back what I paid for my place five years ago, let alone with $75,000 of improvements added to it! One of you other guys can have the prize.
