The fridge was a challenge to keep clean -- fingerprints, water marks from the water dispenser, scratches and scuffs all showed disappointingly well. Stainless cleaners weren't easy to find, either, and I found that the sprays didn't work as well as the goopy liquid cleaners. I also had a stainless range/oven with a black enamel cooktop, and the enamel had become discolored from material cooking on, and the black showed every little speck and fingerprint.

Hmm, I didn't really want a water dispenser, but we did get one, but fortunately it's inside the 'fridge.
Thanks for the tips about the goopy cleaners, that's what I happen to have, and it seems fairly easy to find here.
And yes, whether black or white, I guess you have to clean up those cooktops right away or else the cooked-on stuff can almost become part of the range.
This thread is funny and fascinating. I love the diversity of opinion.

I use a product called "Stainless Magic" - spray on foam - like Scrubbing Bubbles. Spray it on, initial wipe off with a dry cloth (btw - I've found cloth diapers work best), then wipe again to shine. Really easy and it works well and isn't gloppy.

My kitchen has black appliances and I love it! Very easy to keep clean and it is a classic.

If you like the look of stainless but want the easy to take care of practicality of white or black why not buy "silver finish" appliances. They're made of the same material (and they're the same price) as white or black appliances but they have a silver, smudge-proof finish. I'm getting it myself. There are no fingerprints like you get with stainless. Unless you touch it you can barely tell the difference between them and real stainless appliances. Frigidaire, for example, makes a nice package of appliances in a finish called "silver mist."
Here's an example:

Stainless is all the rage NOW, white is extremely undesirable. Black is more in than white.
But in 5-10 years? Who knows, stainless could be out by then.
If you are not trying to sell anytime soon, I say RIDE THE WAVE for a while. Who knows, in 2 years there may be some new color appliances in style (remember the days of puke olive green?)

In our home in Germany I have a stainless wall oven since 11 years and no problem with fingerprints. Our fridge and dishwasher are fully integrated (which is NOT expensive over here).
I think stainless steel is so popular because it works with any other color. For me, white appliance is okay in a white kitchen (like in our house in Florida) and black appliance is best in a dark kitchen. From today's perspective, I'd say I'll always choose stainless. But who knows what's next. Not even granite will be timeless, imho.

speaking of colored appliances, I LOVE the "retro" stoves out now in all the funky colors, but would never get one.
