Hey all! So I have constructed the frame for an island I am building and now I need to put the butcher block on top. Any suggestions as to whether I should attach it to 1/2 inch ply wood or just directly to the frame? Any advice would be appreciated. I know not to glue it down because it will expand and contract with humidity levels.
What sort of blocking did you build into the base?
If the bases are built solidly and at correct height I would not have an intermediate layer. If you planned on using half inch plywood to reinforce the bases I would factor that into the dimensions so to keep every thing looking very professional. Anytime you can see from the side or underneath how something was assembled that looks very much like a DIY job...
Not sure how to insert a picture or I could post a drawing. Basically, the legs are made of 2x4 with 2x2s attached to form an "L" shape. Then there are two layers of what I would call supports. A rectangle made of 2x4s that are screwed into the legs holding them together. These rectangles have a support down the middle as well. There is one layer a few inches off the floor which has plywood ontop and is a shelf, and the top layer is flush with the top of the legs.
I am by no means a professional and this is only the second I have build from scratch, so I am sure its not perfect.
