Has anyone refaced their own kitchen cabinets? My husband is FAIRLY handy, but we don't want to get in over our heads! We had Home Depot out to give an estimate and it was really high which got us thinking about the DIY route. I would appreciate any info or opinions from those who have done this. thanks!!

My husband is fairly handy and has remodeled kitchens. However, I would not have him reface cabinets. Mistakes are costly and really stand out.

We had some 1930 built in cabinets refaced with maple and the drawers rebuilt. It was awesome. We could not remove due to glass walls and ceiling and this worked out great. I truly believe you could not tell.

If going to Lowes and HD, I would try and get other estimates. I have been quoted too high on their installations.

If you are talking about refacing your current cabinets and you don't have the tools and fall short of the skill level required, hire a professional to reface them.

You can by just buy doors at many stores if you have standard size cabinets, this is a DIY project has provided you can use a tape, level and screwdriver you can do it.

There are many ways to reface cabinets.

I had a friend that had her cabinets refaced. I don't know that I would want to tackle that project unless I had some experience. I agree with others that you should get some bids other then Home Depot, they tend to be expensive. Check with some local contractors/remodelers, chances are they do the work or can direct you to someone that can for a lot less.

We are planning on doing this in our kitchen in the next few years. We like the layout of the kitchen but the cabinets are becoming more dated as we go.

Default Yes

There are different ways to make a kitchen pop. You can buy paint, laminated paper that looks like wood and stain new trim to match. Another option is to simply replace the door and drawer fronts and replace it yourself. The first option is the easiest, the least expensive, and it can look just as good as the renovated kitchen on HGTV.

I bought and sold houses for 25 years. A cheap paint is an enemy, but a great paint is a new best friend. It takes more than resurfacing to update an old kitchen; mine was over 100 years old. It starts with a vision, a budget and an understanding of why you want to update the kitchen? The kitchen is one of two big selling point in any house. Fancy cabinets do not sell houses. Storage and convenience are the two big items.

To try your hand at resurfacing cabinets buy a cheap door blank for practice, a sheet of inexpensive laminate, a small can of wood stain, a piece of half-round wood moulding, small paneling nails, a quart of high quality, high gloss, water based, enamel paint, one good quality 3" brush, one good quality 2" sash brush, and a mitre box. Practice for 30 days. Set a goal of six weeks to finish the update.
