we were not allowed to have a laundry chute when we built our house - against fire code. it was probably BS, but didn't care enough to pursue it. but check it out for yourself.

Personally, I prefer the laundry room in close proximity to the kitchen area. I am a great one to do washing while I'm either cooking or watching television, and I like adding bleach/softener or checking on the drying process (if I want something only in the dryer for 10 minutes and no more) between commercials or within easy access to the kitchen. That's just me, though, and I live on one level.

I've only known one gal who had leakage from an upstairs laundry in a new house in a high-end subdivision. It made quite a mess as the water cascaded down the walls and onto the floor, but that is the only case that I've heard of. However, I never forgot it and prefer the laundry room on the first floor on concrete.

As an aside, I, too, LOVE one level living!

That's why they typically put trays UNDER washers to catch spills. Liz

I love the laundry chute idea - that would be a selling point for me if I was looking to buy the home (has a cute, old-fashioned charm too ).

What about a full-size washer/dryer downstairs and a smaller top/bottom set upstairs? Would the builder put in 2 laundry rooms?

no riveree, they're only going to have the one laundry room. If we choose an alternate kitchen plan ( which we're thinking of since it would make our kitchen a little more open), the laundry room would move upstairs.

Yeah, you'd think that would do the trick. Guess there was too much water when the water hose ruptured. Poor pumpkin.
