Hi group,

So I caught a squirrel today gnawing on one of the posts that supports my front porch . . . chewing away and eating the wood. Does anyone know how to deter squirrels from chewing on my posts?

Thanks in advance.

Maybe paint them with the same stuff they paint stables with to keep horses for chewing on them.

If they are chewing on your post I would bet that they are also chewing on the lead caps on your roof stack vents. Go to a roofing supply house and tell them that squirrels are chewing on the lead caps and they will sell you a caulking compound that you can apply to the top and edge and it will stop them for doing this.

My sister's neighbor has a habit of shooting the squirrels out of his trees with a pellet gun... wouldn't be so bad if he'd stick to the ones in his yard, but he has a tendency to forget where the fence line is on occasion.

To keep squirrels from chewing, go to the pet store and buy some bitter apple spray. It's used to keep dogs from chewing, and works just as well on the rodent family. You'll have to reapply it after heavy rain, but it isn't very expensive.

Take the squirrel to the dentist. It sounds like gum disease. Other than that, apply a repelant to the wood, and to any other posts they may move to.
