There should be an existing survey showing property lines and the location of the house, or you can pay to get a survey done.

Anyone wanting to install or tear out a fence should confirm the location of utilities and property boundaries with a survey.

Generally, by how the fence was installed. If the "good" side is toward you, it's your neighbor's fence. If the horizontal support rails are facing your yard, it's your fence.

Of course, the installer of said fence may not have stuck to the good neighbor rules.

Here they are a condition of buying your house... so it's with the purchase paperwork, along with inspection, etc.

Usually by witch way it is facing. A fence should always be installed away from your house.

yep survey. there is another post by someone having problems witht heir neighbor over a fence and after pages of whining and complaining, emotions galore, the best advice still came down to the survey. Just because you think its your land, it may very well be your neighbors.

You can print out the property survey for free at your town hall. Go to the hall of records, they have it all online.

It depends on the region. Where I live, homeowners aren't required to put the good side facing towards the neighbors.

There's no unofficial or official "good neighbor/bad neighbor" rule with regards to how the fence is facing.

I'm guessing the unofficial rule exists. Just the "some" choose to ignore it.
