I can't comment on their respective effects on clothes, but this is most definitely not true. Bleach is very alkaline (high pH between 12 and 13), while battery acid is very acidic (ph less than 1). There are some alkaline batteries that use potassium hydroxide (lye) to maintain alkalinity, but this wouldn't be called acid.
Common bleach is sodium hypochlorite, or NaOCl. The hypochlorite ion is a strong yet unstable oxidizing agent. Cheaper detergents directly add this substance so the first few minutes of washing are characterized by a high bleach concentration followed by a rapid fall, while the better ones typically incorporate granules or gels that slowly release hypochlorite or another oxidizing agent so that the concentration is lower but sustained longer, which is easier on fabric.
Phosphates are not so much about cleaning as they are about water softening and rinsing. Hard water does a really bad job of rinsing. For some parts of the country, this is an issue, while in other places the phosphate really doesn't do much.
Well that was great. Now Chemistry Guy give us some recommendations on products that will work to remove grease, oil and other stains that we had no problem getting out of our clothes ten years ago.
You know product combos that will work but not cause the enviroment to collapse into devolution.
Most places you can buy Tri-Sodium Phosphate at a hardware store, I am not certain how much you need to add to the current gelded detergents, but maybe a Google search will provide some info.Wisk, at least when I was oilfield trash, was the standard grease removing detergent.Hot water will help too.You may want to go to a professional cleaner, they may have some stuff you can't easily get.Final idea - rub some "Goop" waterless hand cleaner into the greasy spots on the jeans before washing, while they are still dry.
