OK, I went pee, flushed, stood up to pull my pants up & as I was doing this, the keys in my pocket fell out and whooshed down the pot! Now, I dont care if I lose them, because I have replacements (only my car key & house key, store savings cards, and a "Peeps" key ring thingy were on there). My main concern is clogging it & not being able to flush toilet again. How do I tell if I need to call a plumber? Please help - my husband is ticked off at me!

Never fear. Tell him your boyfriend did it. It wasn't your fault.

Highly unlikely they would catch on anything. Anything smaller than a tin of snuff generally goes right down. Don't ask me how I know about snuff tins in toilets - hint, it wasn't me.

This is what I would perhaps do....

First, turn off the water going into the tank by shutting off the shut off valve right next to the toilet, coming out of the wall or floor right next to the toilet.
With a latex gloved hand, scoop out most of the water out of the bowl.

With a flexible string magnet or grabber, try to see if they may still be in the bowl trap. If they are not, you could pull the toilet and just have to replace the wax ring and re-seat.

You could also open a drain clean out in the cellar distal to the toilet and flush a few times to see if you can see them go by the clean out.

Or, like you said, consider them gone and hope they go all the way to the street without causing any problems. If the toilet was not used again, they might be right there in the trap.....

Frank

Hah.

Chances are, they're gone, but I doubt they'll clog anything up. As Frank said, if nothing else has been flushed they may still be in the toilet trap, but with the flushing power of newer toilets I'd doubt it.

As for calling a plumber, on the off chance they cause a clog you'll probably know in the next day or so. If the water in the bowl rises higher than normal, or stops swirling on flush, you've got a clog.

They may nothave gone very far. If you are not comfortable taking the toilet off, then call a plumber. They are probably still inside the toilet trap.

Once upon a time, I flushed an asthma inhaler ... the toilet did not seem to mind. It didn't even have any side effects!

You simply wait to see if it causes a problem.
