Actually, it's called "Spring Bronze".
In the high-end homes I built, we always installed wood doors. And the jambs were not made for barbed tab compression weatherstripping. I had a subcontractor that did nothing but spring bronze, drip edges, thresholds, and locksets (mortise type).

HAHA, yes, those too. It took several years but we've gotten the walls under control

A previous poster mentioned the difference between brass and copper sealing strips and I know ours were brass. Maybe the copper ones hold up better.

I have an old house w/ the original wood door. One of those door "sweep" thingies worked to keep a lot of the draft from coming in the bottom. It is a strip of rubber or plastic attached to a strip of metal.

You screw the metal part to the door, and the bottom part sweeps along the floor. It works pretty well for keeping out drafts and cost a couple of dollars at home depot. Similar to" http://images.orgill.com/200x200/8012742.jpg

For one of the doors in the back, there were strips of felt stapled to the inside of the jamb(?). Worked pretty well, and probably not expensive.

I just got back from visiting my daughter and son-in-law in Pittsburgh. They are renting a circa 1925 house. High on charm, low on weatherproofing. As newlyweds, and since my daughter is having some health issues, they don't have a lot of money. I got a pair of dollar store pantyhose, cut them in half, stuffed them with old socks, bits of leftover yarn (DD knits), etc, and made "draft dodgers" for the bottoms of the doors. My daughter is going to knit covers for them eventually. I also found a website detailing how to use bubble wrap as window insulation.

BubbleWrap

It really works!!! I did the side and rear windows and almost immediately the house got warmer. It kind of looks cool, too.
