...that works for the part of the ladder company that puts all the warning stickers together diligently crafting a new label. Now, after the warning about "Do NOT step above HERE" and "Do NOT use near power lines" there will be written in honor of Lab6120: "Do NOT place this ladder atop any other ladder or scaffold".
YIKES! Wonder what the point loads on the those upper ladders were like back through the plywood-- sure hop you are not a "big guy'...

Get a professional, and while they are there (if you have the funds), have them install a lift. We have a 2-story foyer also and the lift makes it easy to change bulbs and clean the chandelier. Ours was $500 for the lift plus installation of the lift and the chandelier.
I have a chandelier that is mounted about the same way (18+ foot ceiling). I clean it once a year and have found that my 24' extension ladder with a stand-off mounted so that it is far away from the wall gets me reasonable access.
I have also used it to replace a ceiling fan in another room that has the same height. Initially I called a number of firms to do the work but once they heard the details of height and distance from wall they declined to bid on the job.
The stand off for the extension ladder (some are just called a stabilizer) has been a valuable tool.
I know, I know-I have grown so much in the past 3 years-I would not even think of attempting something like that again. We bought a new light fixture for Christmas and couldn't find any contractors because of the holidays-So "smart" me came up with that contraption. If you look closely-I put a 2x6 on top of the plywood and bolted it to the other ladder-it was pretty secure except for the fact that I still had to stretch to reach the light. My wife made me put on a helmet

Bwah ha ha!!! OMG - thats something my DH would think of to try. Glad you lived through it so we can all now laugh at it!
Have to ask....did you or your wife think to get pictures of that set up?
To the OP ... either rent a scaffold or hire a professional. If you rent the scaffold make sure to get directions on setting it up. Some companies don't supply them unless you ask.
