I saw that episode earlier this year. From what I can remember, right off the bat, I'm thinking "low-country" style houses with wrap-around porches and having to walk up stairs to the porch level.
The other term I'm thinking of that starts with an "a" is "Acadian" style houses, which seem to be very popular along the gulf in MS and LA. Does this ring any bells?
Hope this helps! Good luck.

I would bet Acadian (or cajun) is what you want. Wide overhangs on large porches to shade the house from the sun, north/south orientation to allow for natural ventilation in the summer. There is a good diagram here, and this describes the style.
That said, like virgo said, almost any house style (low-county, antebellum, etc) originating in the deep south is going to have the large porches to deal with the unbearable heat and humidity in the summer.
