I was wondering is someone could help me in this situation? I moved into a house where the previous owners had quite a few animals. We are currently trying to battle an odor problem. The problem is when we leave for vacation and return, the house has a strong smell of old Pet Fresh carpet powder. Apparently, they used it a lot before replacing the carpet with hardwood floors. It takes days for the smell to mellow out somewhat, but it drives me nuts and slightly irritates our noses. Do you have any ideas on how to remove the smell?
If the carpet was replaced with hardwood, my first thought is the powder is under the new hardwood floors.
I think the only way to get rid of it is to remove the hardwood floors, clean and vacuum and put the floors back down. that's a bit extreme.
it also sounds like when you have been gone for a few days and return, you just acclamate to the smell and it's not irritatiimg anymore. What to do to get rid of it: I have no idea. Sorry that didn't help much.
My hunch is that they didn't give it some time to "air" out the smell after pulling the carpets. I always pull the carpet out and run the fans for a day or two before putting in the new floor and trapping the smells. I don't think there are going to be much you can do.
Maybe the powder is still in your air ducts? You said they replaced the rugs with hardwood floors, so it's not likely embedded in the floors. A lot of stuff can build up in your heating/ air-conditioning ducts, and you may just be recirculating the carpet powder around inside your house.
You can pay to have your ducts cleaned out.
I wonder when they replaced carpet with the wood floors. It might be that the wood too had some exposure to animal fluids and they used the powder so extensive, that now the wood is saturated with it too...
Perhaps since powder spreads about so easily, it could be still in cracks, on painted walls, ceiling. I had a similar issue with one rm in my old home. After the wood floors were cleaned with a pet-odor removal solution, we also had that rm completely vacuumed/painted.
That worked!

I'm still going with the ductwork. I bet if you had them cleaned out, you'd be surprised at what they'd find in there.
