5' pocket door??!!
Recently I was looking at a house that just went up for sale and it was the oddest beast I ever saw. Looks like it hasnt been remodeled since the 50's. Still has a drawer range under the stove built into the kitchen wall. Never saw anything like that. Has an extra outside door right into the bathroom. And what I thought was the wierdest touch was 2 pocket doors, each one piece at least 5' wide for each bedroom. Wish I had pictures of the place because the ones on the agents site are not very good inside.
Has anyone else seen doors like that. I would hate living with those big heavy suckers.
Well I just had to find and share one pic of the kitchen that I found. Look to the right and you can see the "appliance" that I was trying to describe.

I grew up in an old house, 1840's old. Most of our family friends had old homes as well and large pocket doors were very common--openings would be at lest 5' wide, most were more then that though. The doors were usually very ornate and heavy but since craftsmen took pride in their work then the opening mechanisms were well balanced making the doors easy to open.

I can't comment on the doors, but I will comment on the stove though. That range dates to the early 1960's and was the height of style at its time. I believe it was a Frigidare. It was used in the kitchen on the old TV show Bewitched. A friend had one and I always loved it. I think it is pretty neat. It may be getting to the point where it might be worth something to someone who wants a retro kitchen. Jay

Our home has big ole honkin pocket doors. It was built in 1900 and there is a manufacture date stamped on the inside of the latches and pulls of 1886.

beautifull. We have called for this type of pocket doors in a design of two houses. the builder complained for weeks about it, they are a pain to install apparently lol

I love pocket doors! You can utilize all of the space in a room because the door does not open into it.

30 years ago we looked at a house with an unusual range like that one and said to each other just how much is it going to cost to replace and remodel around that stove?
Recently a real estate agent posted a picture of a very expensive older home with a drop in range and wall oven by Chambers in a copper finish. Same issue, how much will it cost to either repair or replace these?
Definetely was not a selling point for me.

Historic Bessemer, those are nice. Picture that same width opening with one door, not as tall though, hehe. The ones in this house are not in good shape. I think at the least their mechanicals need a good cleaning. I do have to say it made for an interesting and unique house.
