Fairly old boiler that just started to make a whining noise for ~10 secs when it kicks on (cycles throughout the day at 66F). We finally got our first snowfall and the noise coincidentally started today - was wondering if it could be related to freezing/ice/condensation issues? It's been about 20F-30F today.
I've always wondered how dangerous it is with gas and what could set the whole thing off. At what point do I worry that much about it?
revisiting this thread... still making the noise, now after regular showers using hot water so it has nothing to do with outside temperature. So it's likely a mechanical part like you guys have mentioned. But will it contribute to a quicker demise of the boiler as a whole? Doesn't sound like it. Generally speaking, would it be ok to run this thing and ignore the noise? Our plumber said the boiler would probably only last 1 more summer (which was 2011) and we're heading into winter #2 past that already.
