My husband and I have a disagreement about central air conditioning.

When it is hot in the house, I turn the thermostat to 65 degrees to cool it down quickly. My husband says that the house will get just as cool just as quickly by putting the thermostat at 72, and that the only reason a house gets colder when you put the thermostat at 65 is because the air conditioner runs LONGER. That the air temperature coming out of the air conditioner is not any colder at 65.

I disagree. I think that the air coming out of the air conditioner is colder if it is set at 65 degrees.

Which is correct?

thank you for your input.

Had to grab my coffee. The a/c is either cooling or not. Running longer gets the room cooler. Now if you leave it set at 65 it will eventually be cooler than it would be set at 72. If capable of course.

For years my wife and I had a conversation along the same lines. A few years ago she bought a car with an "automatic" heating/cooling system where she just sets the temperature she wants and it controls if the heat or AC is needed to achieve the temp she wants.

I said I have been telling you our home system is the same, but until she saw/read it in the car manual, who was she to believe me about the house.......LOL

DH and I fight the AC war, too.

Last summer was really hot and the AC could not cool into the low 60s, where he likes it.

My position was that if it will cool no lower than 74 degrees, just set it on 74. Setting it on 65 will make it keep running and burn up electricity but it will not get any cooler.

He also likes to run the fan on the AC continuously. I do not think that makes it any cooler, either.

He also insists on running the downstairs unit, which will achieve a lower temp bcause it is a walkout basement. His theory is that warm air rises, but since it is naturally cooler down there, I do not think enough warm air is rising up the stair well that connects the two spaces to make a difference. I do not think cooling downstairs, when we seldom go there since the kids are grown and gone, makes any sense.

What do you HVAC gurus think? It is a ground source system.
