I currently have oak, and while they are pretty, I prefer the look of the white cabinets like I had in my old house. I agree white will brighten the room. Cherry is a little too dark for me...
We had our kitchen installed last January. We have maple cabinets and I really like them.
Here it's not very common to get real wood (only when having oak cabinets). So the fronts and everything is easier to be cleaned. Our counter is a mixture of grey with some red and beige in it - very easy to handle and you don't see any crumbs lying around
We also have the oven installed above normal height (which would be standing on the floor) so you don't need to bend down to open it and put things in it. Very nice. Also the appliances of the oven can be pushed in and out so they don't stand out the whole time. As for cooking we have an induction hearth with touch screen. I really love that, it's so fast to cook with .
Being around in the last two weeks I see the fashion changing again. Now there are lots of kitchens with dark wood bodies and glossy coloured fronts like orange or deep red or even black. Having a big and light kitchen it surely would look wonderful.
I prefer cherry or maple. Can't stand oak! I have alder in my kitchen. Couldn't afford maple or cherry so I went with alder. It's the softest hardwood.
It seems to me that both white and oak are very dated. White is very popular in the south, but to me it's like being in a glacier. I bucked the trend 15 years ago and got natural maple, and now that we're trying to sell our house, I'm so glad I did because it still looks very current.
I think you're safe if you get anything simple and good quality, rather than trendy. I think the current trend towards "Tuscan" ornate cupboards are going to look very dated in a few years.
I prefer wood--cherry or maple. Oak is outdated. Actually, I was doing some research on this and apparently sales of oak cabinets have died over recent years so that's a good indication that it is dated.
My cabinets are bright arctic white, with warmer color highlights in the floor tiles and backsplash. During part of my childhood in Maine, we had lived in a few houses that had these big spacious kitchens and pantries, and they were all the same white color. So, perhaps I just have these positive associations with it.

I think so too. Although I enjoy a bright red high-gloss kitchen at a friend's home, I definitely wouldn't want to look at it every day.
I seem to be drawn to painted cabinets, usually cream or colonial green or red. I also like maple and cherry, but absolutely hate oak. Oak is so "pedestrian". It is everywhere. Guess what we have... oak. Jay
We had maple in our last house. They were SO beautiful!!!! My husband custom made them himself and said he will never do that again as maple is such a hard/solid wood to work with.....but they were beautiful.

We had maple cabinets in our last house, too. (But my husband did not do the work himself, that is very impressive, Dawn.)
Not only were they beautiful, but they were so sturdy--we had them 9 years and they were still in perfect condition when we moved. Maybe that's partly why they are so hard to work with?
Some day I will have them again!
