Are you able to go help your Aunt? She could get bitten. Please warn her...it is very bad, they carry lots of germs and diseases. All the other posters have given great advice. Close the opening. Call that exterminator, she paid, and they didn't do the job.
Chances are the squirrel got in by accident and then found out it was a great vacation spot. I agree with the idea of a live trap, particularly the one by Have-a-Hart. See if the pest control folks will loan you one. Place it parallel to and touching a wall. Try not to handle it too much (scent) but peanut butter does sound like a good bait. I once had a black squirrel come into a finished attic and ended up trapping it under an open box when it was cornered in the closet. Not the ideal situation I must admit, because then I had to slide something under the box and lift it all up very carefully to take it away from the house.
If it's trapped up there (got in but doesn't know how to get out), some sort of live trap method would be best.
If it's moved up there (and knows how to get in and out), you'll need to detract it from wanting to be there. In this case, bug bombs work well. These are those little 3-pack of cans that fog an area. When the squirrel is in the attic, deploy a bug bomb. It won't like it and will leave. Once it has left, block where it's coming in. If you can't find or get to that spot, the next time it returns, let another bomb go. It'll learn. Also, read the directions. Keep away from open flames and don't breath it yourself.
Don't need to catch it, just get rid of it. How? Moth balls- they can't stand the smell. Just thrown some from the skuttle towards the end where it comes in and the problem is over. Costs less than 5 bucks.
Can this be a preventive measure... put mothballs there before there are squirrel problems so they don't want to come in.??
