I don't know if you know this or not but the SEER rating is basically an efficiency rating. If you went from a 10 SEER system to a 13 SEER system that's a 30% increase in efficiency. Going from a 13 SEER system to a 15 SEER system is about a 15% efficiency increase.

Yes, my current system is a 10 SEER. The bills are really high here in the Summer, and the Summer runs 5 months :-) So I'm thinking the difference of a few hundred dollars in pricing between the 13 SEER and 15 SEER units would be recouped (given the added 15% efficiency) over the life of the system. But I see where you're going with this. If I was living in Minnesota or Vermont and using gas or oil for heating in the Winter, and Summers weren't so bad, it might not make sense to go to 15 SEER.

I currently have a 24ys old central air conditioner Comfortmaker 10 seers which I am looking to replace. I have been given a quote of Lennox 14ACX Merit Series 2.5 tons for $3,995 or Lennox 13ACX for $3,655 or Lennox Elite XC-14-030 for $5,085. He said that would include "outdoor condenser, indoor coil, flush refrigerant lineset and connect electrical. replace outdoor unit pad and thermostat. Start up equipment and set up for efficiency, comfort and long equipment life". I live in a condo 1547 square foot in Connecticut. Please advise me. Thank you

To the OP - we replaced our entire HVAC system (air handler and compressor and did some other HVAC work as well). About 4 years ago. Unit cost about $10k (the misc. - mostly repairs/replacement of stuff in the attic that handles zones - was about $1k). It's a Trane - and we have about 2900 sf under AC in Florida.

I am sure we didn't get the best possible price. We just used the HVAC contractor that did the original installation when we built our house. Not having an uncomfortable day for more than a decade is worth a lot to me - and this contractor made sure that happened .

I'm not sure why you'd have 2 separate systems for a house that's < 2500 sf. Have you looked into this? Robyn
