I am planning on having my shower remodeled and have called several glass companies for quotes on an approximately 60"x70" glass shower door and I have found much better prices at big box stores. If I purchase a shower door at a big box store, would the shower remodeling contractor be able to transport it safely in his pickup truck or van?

You can order online for home delivery and have the ups guy bring it to you... they have free shipping all the time at the depot and at lowes...It you get a broken one, just take it into the closest store and try again...
I was in the glass business for 20 years and glass is normally transported standing on an end not laying flat. The SD should be tempered glass and if you are traveling a short distance laying it flat in the back of your PU should be OK.
Is it in the original box ? Does the box say "This side up" ? How does the Box store store the box ?
Glass is very strong, what it's susceptible too is shocks especially to small areas. I would assume the glass is going to boxed in it's original packing which will designed to prevent breakage, as long as it's secured upright along the longest edge so it's not bouncing around and it has adequate shock absorbing material along that edge it should be fine.
You can also rent a nice flatbed pickup truck at the depot and lowes for $20 (for 75 minutes) - no mileage charge...
The last time I rented one they time-stamped the rental to begin after the truck was loaded & they helped load it..
One time I was buying stuff at Lowes, but they had rented both of their trucks, so I rented a truck at the Depot and took it to Lowe's... the manager & several employees wanted to come out and take pictures with the Depot's truck..
If you can find a contractor with a clean-enough truck to haul something, you should be fine - but most contractors I've seen had their trucks full of junk.
If you're buying a new tub, toilet, vanity, tile, drywall, etc, it might be worth it to pay for delivery as well - they'll bring everything bundled onto pallets & drop it right inside the garage. If you need a bunch of stuff the delivery charge is sometimes worth it.
The stuff from the big name brands is always packed in contractor friendly cartons.
The stuff from the glass shops has to be delivered by the shop on a glass truck
