As in it resembles a heating element turned on high, producing no light. Bulb has been there about a year. Obviously going to change it out but slightly worried this could be an indication the light fixture might not be compatible with a CFL, or is this typical for a bulb nearing the end of it's life?
Not a fixture problem. Just a defective CFL. Usually happens at EOL along with discoloration of the plastic base and some melting. Dispose of it.
